Taking advantage of our prior enlisted Sentinels (mustangs) is one way to shorten OCS—however, we must also look into more programs that allow for the direct commission of Coast Guard Officers considering the USCG does not provide specialized training (secondary schooling) to officers leaving OCS. This takes advantage of skills learned outside of the USCG and gets our Officers into the fleet faster for on-the-job training and experience.

Like most of the armed forces, the Coast Guard is experiencing workforce shortages. The Coast Guard gets less than one-half of its officer corps from the Coast Guard Academy, and that program is at capacity. Over one-half of the Coast Guard's officer corps currently accesses through Officer Candidate School. Your Country Needs You - so remember the need for National Skills! I have been doing a lot of work in the 'FE Skills System' space recently, including helping Principals shape their colleges' response around Annual Accountability Statements, reviewing the outputs from LSIP's and also as a Governor directly responding to Ofsted and the Skills Agenda. So, I think I am pretty clued up on this. One thing that does jump out however is how do we encourage colleges to 'look up' and out of region to a truly National System (and Systems Leadership within) to ensure that organisations such as Defence (Army, Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and Royal Air Force) continue to receive a flow of people-power necessary to sustain numbers, and thus assure 'National Output' who arrive for initial training with the correct starting skills set? Colleges have been preparing and shaping the majority of workforce for Defence roles for generations (most ships, Squadrons, Battalions and Regiments are built on ex-FE students), but do colleges all realise this? Some do, and have done great work such as RAF Careers Colleges, but for most it is the Public Services and Uniformed Courses that lay the foundations for a career without regional and sub-regional boundaries. When thinking Skills and LSIP's and aligning your curriculum - please also have the confidence to look above; for example I know that our Defence Forces need in excess of 30,000 people entering each year - just to stand still, and the prognosis on the desired numbers of young people joining the Forces, particularly the Army in the next 5 years doesn't look great, which is a real shame given that for many the career(s) on offer can be amazing. To conclude, the Skills System doesn't just stop at Regional boundaries, so, regardless of Qualification and Funding challenges please keep the national picture in mind with your Curriculum Plans!

The Center of Gravity: Marine Corps Education MCDP-1, Warfighting, delineates the complementary concepts of center of gravity (COG) and critical vulnerability (CV). A unit, whether friendly or adversarial, may possess one or more COGs and or CVs. Within a Formal Learning Center (FLC), the facilitator/instructor assumes the role of the COG. At Training Command, the COG resides in the FLC's facilitators, as reinforced by Commanding General, Training Command. Given that the facilitator serves as Training Command's FLCs' COG, or source of strength, how is this COG protected? The facilitator finds protection and reinforcement within the FLC they belong to. The FLC cultivates the capabilities of its facilitators, sending them to MCCLD FLEX, DLEX, or a sister service facilitation school. Some FLCs may even provide opportunities for attendance at Bob Pike Boot Camp or other external facilitation enhancement programs. Subsequently, the FLC collaborates with the facilitator to further refine the skills acquired. The facilitator, as the COG, provides the organization with strength and morale through their ability to deliver effective facilitation. This ultimately leads to the production of qualified students across various MOSs within Training Command. The facilitator is essential for accomplishing Training Command's mission, hence the need for their protection and reinforcement at all costs. This explains the emphasis placed on facilitator training and the ongoing recruitment efforts by Training Command to attract Marines for facilitator duty. #marines #usmc #education #facilitator #learning
